All Ph.D. students start as precandidates. Once certain coursework and exam requirements have been met they can advance to candidacy. Advancement to candidacy is an important step and should not be delayed. Precandidates are expected to do research, but once candidacy is achieved, research becomes the major focus of the candidates work. All students must find a research advisor to supervise their research. Requirements for the Ph.D. degree comprise: Laboratory Course Requirement; Breadth Course Requirements; Rackham Candidacy Requirements; Written Candidacy Exam; Oral Dissertation Prospectus; Dissertation and Dissertation Defense.

Students must have a master degree for admission. The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is required for most graduate programs. Competence in the English language as evidenced by a score of at least 220(CBT), 84 (iBT) or 560(paper TOEFL) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language, MELAB (80), IELTS (6.5).
