Education & Experience
Virginia L. McLaughlin has been Dean of the School of Education at the College of William and Mary since 1995. Prior to becoming Dean, Dr. McLaughlin was Associate Dean in the School of Education for seven years and served as Chief of Staff for President Timothy J. Sullivan for two years. Before returning to her alma mater in 1983, she was a faculty member at Clemson (1977-80) and Old Dominion (1980-83) Universities. Her teaching career began in the public schools of Greenville and Charleston, South Carolina. Dean McLaughlin was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated in 1971 with Highest Honors in Psychology from the College of William and Mary. She earned a masters degree in special education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Memphis.

Key accomplishments include comprehensive restructuring of programs and governance systems, national ranking among schools of education, a successful history of obtaining external grants and contracts, strengthened partnerships with Arts and Sciences and P-12 schools, expanded international programs, and the planning and construction of a new state-of-the-art facility which opened in May 2010.
Teaching & Research
Virginia McLaughlin's teaching and research efforts focus on curriculum development and evaluation, collaborative service delivery for students with disabilities and those at-risk, and comprehensive P-16 data systems. She directs several federal and state grants supporting teacher and leadership preparation programs.
Professional & Community Service
Currently, Dean McLaughlin serves on the Virginia Board of Education as well as Boards of Directors for the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation and the Virginia Network for Women in Higher Education. She is also a member of Virginia's Early Childhood Advisory Council and the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation. Dean McLaughlin currently chairs the national Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions (CADREI).
Family
Virginia's husband, John McLaughlin, is an independent consultant in planning and performance assessment. He serves as an evaluator for several national centers in special education and for other education and science projects in universities, state and federal agencies. The McLaughlins' ever-expanding family includes four children and six grand-daughters. They are active in the Williamsburg community and busy with dogs and horses on their small farm in Toano.
