The Stanford University School of Education is pleased to offer an undergraduate minor in the field of Education. The minor is structured to provide a substantial introduction to Education through a broad-based and focused study of educational research, theory and practice. The goals of the minor are to allow undergraduates to develop an understanding of the core issues facing educators and policymakers, to make connections to their major programs of study, and to provide rigorous preparation for graduate studies in Education.

Requirements

All students pursuing a minor in Education must complete a minimum of 20 units of course work in Education.

Course work completed for the Education Minor must be approved by the Minor Director and meet the following criteria:

All courses must be taken at Stanford University

A minimum of 6 courses are to be taken for a minimum of 3 units each

3.0 GPA must be maintained for all courses applied toward the minor

All courses must be taken for a letter grade

Courses used to fulfill the minor requirements may not be used to fulfill any other department degree requirements (major or minor)

A maximum of 30 EDUC units may be applied to the minor in Education

Courses

All students are required to take the core course:

EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching and Learning addresses foundational issues in Education and requires field observations in school sites. This course is reading and writing intensive.

All students are required to complete two of the following six foundational courses:

Declaring the Minor

Declaring the Minor

Students interested in pursuing an undergraduate Minor in Education begin by contacting the Minor Director, Jennifer Wolf, Ph.D. (jlwolf@stanford.edu). After this meeting, students will be asked to complete the Minor Program Proposal (PDF)and the Major-Minor Course Approval (PDF)forms and obtain department approval. Students must meet with the Minor Director and submit an approved Minor Program Proposal no later than the second quarter of their junior year. Finally, students will submit an official application for the minor on Axess. SUSE will notify you of your acceptance into the Education minor within two weeks of completing this process. Students must officially be approved for the minor in Axess by the final quarter of their junior year.
