Elementary Program
The major in elementary education is field-oriented and designed to prepare students to teach children in grades K-6. Beginning in the freshman year, students observe and participate in classrooms in local schools. Most Liberal Education Core courses are taken in the College of Arts and Science.

Students must combine a major in elementary education with a second major in the liberal arts, an interdisciplinary major, or another major offered by Peabody College. Course work beyond the standard 120-hour program may be required for some double majors.

Vanderbilt students seeking teacher licensure must apply through the Office of Teacher Licensure at Vanderbilt and must meet licensure requirements in effect at the time of their graduation, which may be different from licensure requirements in effect at the time they entered Vanderbilt. Licensure requirements are currently undergoing change. Each year, teacher licensure candidates should consult the current Vanderbilt Undergraduate Catalog and the Peabody College Undergraduate Handbook published by the Office of Student Affairs. For more information regarding teacher licensure, contact Chris LaFevor at (615) 322-8270.

For information about current programs, refer to the Undergraduate Handbook.
