History of the School
The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice has its roots in the College of Criminal Justice, which was founded in 1968 through a Ford Foundation Grant. In 2010, the College of Criminal Justice became the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, housed within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Although the original focus of the School in the 1960s and 1970s was largely law enforcement, it has grown with the science of criminal justice and criminology, expanding to encompass a multi-disciplinary approach that fosters critical thinking for a variety of related fields. The College now maintains concentrations within criminology and public policy, law and justice, global criminology, and organizations and leadership.
The School's strong reputation has been built upon both the strength of its faculty's research as well as fieldwork and experiential knowledge. As of 2010, the School is home to several national and international scholars as part of the faculty. We have over 600 undergraduate and about 75 graduate students from all over the globe, who make up part of the student population. Within the larger community of criminology and criminal justice, our graduates have gone on to successful careers in the law, teaching at universities, conducting research, as well as working in a wide variety of federal, state, and local agencies connected to the justice system.
