NONPROFIT POLICY
Overview
How do we address social policy issues in the U.S. today?  Currently, organizations from all three sectors - nonprofit, government, and business are involved with dealing with social problems.  This policy concentration provides opportunities for students to gain an a working knowledge of the nonprofit sector, their contributions to society and the ways they collaborate with government and business to address social problems.  Students interested in Nonprofit Policy should contact Dr. Lester M. Salamon's staff or check out the Center for Civil Society Studies.

Suggested Classes

195.640 Policy Implementation
This course is designed to build on the analytic tools students have already honed. It will help them learn how to apply those tools to effectively implement policies and programs in the public and non-profit sectors and through public/private partnerships. There is an “art” to leading and a “science” to managing systems.  A successful leader/manager combines both sets of skills. Students will learn the tools and techniques of implementation, including selecting strategies, weighing alternatives, planning for contingencies and developing assessment tools. Other skills to be learned include preparing budgets, which are the circulatory systems of programs, and developing schedules that ensure that plans are realized.

195.687 Management Systems for Nonprofit Organizations
Successful nonprofits need to have strong management systems in place in addition to their program activities. The activities are often grouped under the heading of operations and include financial management, human resources management, plant and equipment management, information technology, and marketing. This course provides an introduction to managing the operational side of nonprofit organizations.
