The Non-Profit Management and Community Service program has completed its 15th year of operation. The program was established in 1994 through a generous grant from J.B. Fuqua of Atlanta.
Board Member Seminars
The primary focus of the program is to strengthen the relationship between the corporate and non-profit sectors. Developing more effective boards of directors for non-profit organizations through seminars, service, research and consultation represents a major attempt to enhance the relationship between the two sectors.
The Non-Profit Management and Community Service program hosts six board member seminars each year. The seminars, which are held at the Tate Center on the University of Georgia campus, run from 8:30 am to approximately 4:00 pm. These day-long programs serve various non-profit agencies throughout northeast Georgia.
Instruction in the program is provided by UGA faculty from the Terry College of Business Department of Management. Topics covered include the roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, strategic planning, management of volunteers and other related concerns.
Participants have found the information provided by these seminars valuable in making decisions to help their organizations achieve their goals. In addition to hearing from experts in management, attendees receive printed handouts that serve as an excellent resource for future reference. There is no charge for the seminar, but participants will have to take care of their own lunch and coffee breaks. Several restaurants are conveniently located in the Tate Center. In order to serve as many agencies as possible, attendance is limited to four board members from the same organization at the same seminar.
Volunteer Dawgs
The MBA Volunteer Dawgs program encourages business students to volunteer service with area agencies. The program identifies non-profit organizations in need of help and solicits students to donate their time and skills to help a worthy cause. In some cases, the students have an opportunity to assist organizations while gaining valuable business experience, such as creating a marketing strategy or a business plan. Other opportunities available include working with disadvantaged children, local schools, city libraries, and elderly adults.
