Performing artists work in multimedia entertainment, television, film and stage, and perform in a variety of roles associated with acting, playwriting, casting, directing and management.

At SCAD, performing arts students develop skills within an arts environment where visual creativity, advanced design technologies, hands-on production and cultural dialogue are emphasized.

In collaboration with the film and television department, the fashion and animation departments, and the interactive design and game development department, students participate in a wide range of performance opportunities.

Six main stage productions are offered each year-one for first-year and transfer students only-as well as dance concerts.

Productions may be held in the 1,200-seat historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts; the 1,100-seat Trustees Theater;  the 400-seat Arnold Hall auditorium; the 150-seat black box Mondanaro Theater in Crites Hall; or the 90-seat Afifi Amphitheater at the Pei Ling Chan Garden for the Arts.

Performing arts students participate in original plays, new interpretations of classical and modern plays, musicals, dance concerts, an improvisation group, senior projects and M.F.A. thesis shows.

Professors with backgrounds as award-winning actors, writers and directors share their experiences and are committed to preparing the next generation of performing arts professionals.

The performing arts department offers an in-house casting office and schedules private on-campus auditions with casting agents and producers throughout the year. Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to travel to Atlanta and New York for auditions with industry agents.

M.F.A. students pursue advanced studies in acting, movement, voice-over production, dramatic theory and promotion, and are prepared to enter the workforce with valuable connections, knowledge and on-camera experience.

Minors in vocal performance and dance may complement the major program of study. Undergraduate and graduate degrees in dramatic writing also are offered through the School of Film, Digital Media and Performing Arts.

Auditions
SCAD is a participating university in the National Unified Auditions. High school seniors have the opportunity to present a four-minute audition to enhance their application file and to be considered for a scholarship. Students intending to major in performing arts are required to audition prior to declaring the major and are encouraged to audition at the time of application for admission to SCAD.

Interested students should register online. Once registered, students will be contacted to schedule their individual audition time. The audition serves as the student's official portfolio submission for scholarship consideration. You will not be able to submit another portfolio at a later date.

Additional Savannah audition dates may be found on the SCAD website. Applicants who are unable to attend a SCAD audition may submit a four-minute performance on DVD.

SCAD Audition Requirements
Performing arts applicants should prepare two contrasting monologues or one monologue presented with song or dance. Applicants who plan to sing or dance in a SCAD audition must supply the music for accompaniment in the rehearsed key. Auditions include a cold reading. A list of pieces that have been prepared, résumé and headshot (optional) must be submitted at the audition. Résumé of experience may include acting or other performance, directing, stage management, costume or set design, sound design or lighting design. Performance is reviewed on the following qualitative measures: voice production, movement, musicality, physical commitment, energy, relaxation, characterization, memorization and character portrayal.
