The department offers a varied distribution of research in the areas of the history of philosophy (ancient, medieval/Renaissance, early modern, Kant, 19th century, 20th-century analytic); epistemology; metaphysics; philosophy of mind; cognitive science; moral psychology; normative ethics; metaethics; political philosophy; Chinese philosophy; philosophy of science; philosophy of biology; philosophy of social science; philosophy of law; philosophy of mathematics; and philosophical logic. Individual programs of study are developed for each student, and a cooperative program is available to the student who wishes to combine work in the Duke Philosophy Department with work in the Philosophy Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The following must be needed for the graduate admission: Letters of Evaluation: Three letters are required. They should be written by persons best qualified to testify to Student capacity for graduate work. It is always our preference to have academic references representing Student major field, though we recognize that there are situations where this may not be possible. Transcripts: require one copy of the official, confidential transcript from each institution (undergraduate or graduate) that students have attended. Essential to the review of Student application will be transcripts from any institution where they earned (or will earn) a degree, studied for one semester or more, or took classes that relate to Student current application for graduate study (for example, prerequisite courses).Undergraduate Grade Point Average: All applicants for graduate study at Duke University are required to provide an undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) on their applications.Gre Scores: The Graduate School requires all applicants to provide GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test scores.
