The subjects offered for this program aim to develop a sound knowledge of fundamentals and a familiarity with current progress in the most active and important areas of chemistry. In addition to studying formal subjects, each student undertakes a research problem that forms the core of graduate work. Through the experience of conducting an investigation leading to the doctoral thesis, a student learns general methods of approach and acquires training in some of the specialized techniques of research.

Students should have completed a master degree for doctorate program admissions and bachelor degree for master program admissions. They must have scored the minimum requirement in either TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum requirement for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a minimum score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), or 80 (internet test), however some departments and programs require submission of a TOEFL score of 610 (paper-based test), 255 (computer-based test), or 103 (internet test) or higher. The minimum requirement for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is minimum score of 7.0, however some departments and programs require submission of an IELTS score of 7.5. GRE or GMAT is required for some courses.

Single students can choose from five dormitory or apartment style buildings, and students attending with their spouses and families can live in apartments in one of our two family buildings. MIT has a first class, state of the art housing system. We have one of the oldest graduate residences in the country, and one of the newest, most advanced residence buildings in North America. There are 6 single graduate residences and 2 family apartment buildings on campus : Single Graduate Houses: Ashdown House, Edgerton House, The Warehouse , Sidney-Pacific, Tang Residence Hall, Family Graduate Houses: Eastgate Apartments, Westgate Apartments.
