美国有188所由美国律师协会(ABA)认可的法学院,其中除了一所The Judge Advocate General's School为美国陆军的军校之外,另外187所法学院校每年大约招收3.6万多名的全日制法律学生及约7000名的选读法律学生.所有被ABA认可的法学院,其毕业生均可以参加美国各州的律师考试,大约80%以上的法律学生都以选择律师为主要就业出路,约10%强的法律毕业生进入司法体系或选择其他公职.要获得美国律师协会的认可,法学院必须达到该协会规定的标准,包括学校设施、图书馆藏书、师生比例、课程安排等.
美国大约有13个州允许LLM学生考bar（美国州级律师资格），这13个州中经济比较发达、其bar比较有实用价值的是CA和NY，其中绝大多数的LLM毕业生会选择考NY的bar。不一定要在某个特定的州读LLM，可以到任何一所美国律协认证的法学院(ABA Approved Law School)读LLM，然后到那个允许考bar的州去参加考试。
允许LL.M.报考的个州：
Arizona, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Paula等
各州对考试资格要求各有不同，加州好像是有多少年实际经验就行，哪怕从来没上过法学院也可以，但好像需要有外国律师执照。德州对单纯读个LLM不能考，但是如果在其他国家执业5年以上，就可以考。
首先，考Bar从理论上来说，是为J.D所准备的，而要考Bar的话，必须是要ABA承认的法学院。应该说，ABA认证法学院也基本上完全是从JD学位来认证的，而和这个学校的LLM并没有多大关系。简单的说，要考bar而进ABA认证的法学院，是指进了它的JD才能保证你获得考Bar的资格。
接下来我们进入重要的问题，就是有关International LLM Student考bar的规定。第一个要澄清的事情是，各个洲都有自己的Bar，因此，作为International Student要考bar，首先要知道哪些洲是可以允许外国人来做自己的律师的，而不是看这个学校是不是让你考Bar。简单说，国际学生考Bar，首先是看哪些洲允许国际学生考。那么，哪些洲允许国际学生考呢，有一下这些：
Arizona, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia
第二个问题，或者说第二个要件是，当你找到了允许你考Bar的洲，还要满足你读的是ABA认证的学位。那么上面已经说了，ABA认证学校是根据JD来分的，那么我们LLM学生要考Bar就不可以单单看学校了，ABA是把JD以外的所有学位，按照学位来认证的。下面就是最重要的东西，ABA认证的LLM学位有哪些，这里我给大家一个ABA网站上的表格：

附：纽约州律师资格考试的经历
一、律考报名
在2003年8月至2004年5月期间，我在美国弗吉尼亚州的Washington and Lee University 攻读LLM。我参加的是2004年7月份的纽约BAR考试，填表报名大约是在2004年3月份。
可报考的州：大约有十多个州均允许外国学生报名，其中包括纽约州、加州、弗吉尼亚州等。
报名资格（纽约州）：对于一个来自中国（大陆法系国家）的学生：需要在中国法学院学习3年或以上；需要在美国法学院选修至少20学分且需要选修至少二门基干课。
须送交的资料（纽约州）：填写从网上（www.nybarexam.org ）下载的报名表；提交由国内法学院出具的成绩单、毕业证、学位证证明（我用的是申请入学时剩下的，先见之明嘛！）；美国法学院负责教务的老师出具的公证书；美国法学院的成绩单。
[需要说明和强调一下，美国法学院的成绩单一般要等到毕业后才能取得，所以在离校前一定要向学院负责成绩的老师递交申请，请其于成绩出来时将一份正式成绩单邮寄纽约州律师考试委员会。当然，保险一点的作法是，让其同时给自己也寄上三五份，自己再向律考委寄一份，双保险。我在考试前2周还未收到准考证，打电话才得知律考委未收到我的成绩单（可能是寄丢了）！把人折腾个半死才算未前功尽弃，前后之鉴，望后来者慎之]
二、BAR/BRI的律考培训
5月8日参加了隆重的毕业典礼。之后，我坐上灰狗（greyhound）巴士，奔赴纽约州首府ALBANY（奥伯尼）。提前10天上网订的票，便宜了不少，90多美元的只付了60元左右。有个大学同学在ALBANY攻读经济学博士，事先他已帮我sub-lease了一间房。之所以提前来到考试地ALBANY，是因为BAR/BRI在ALBANY有个培训点， 在ALBANY LAW SCHOOL。
BAR/BRI在律考培训领域的霸主地位，相当于中国移动在中国移动通讯方面的地位。我是在2003年10月左右交了100美金的定金，此定金的交付，可起到订死培训费的作用，以及可以同时免费获得BAR/BRI的法学院学习辅导用书（内容和和律考培训书基本一致）。培训费可是每年都上涨的。培训费当然是贵的，2500美元（含书费）左右。
除了牛人之外，参加BAR/BRI是非常必要的。理由在于：美国学生大多也参加此培训（这理由够充分了吧）；如果你上的是LLM，那就太有必要参加此培训了，此2个月的培训，可使只在美国法学院呆了一年的你，感觉和读了3年的JD的差距大大地缩小了。
在5月初离校前即可拿到BAR/BRI的两本long book. 其余的书是在5月23号左右（培训开始前2天）在ALBANY拿到的。总共有9本书左右。
接下来的不到两个月的时间，便是每天上午骑着一辆从沃尔玛买的中国制造的山地车，去ALBANY LAW SCHOOL听上3个多小时的课，再回到住处，按课程表复习、预习、做题。
那是一段令人身心疲惫，但又令人备感幸福以至难以忘怀的日子。人说，经历是一笔财富，不假。
又必要谈一下身心的调济。我是喜欢跑步的。ALBANY的三条大道和若干小道，在两个月的时间内，被我用脚丈量了若干次。这其中的好处在于，走马观花的了解美国的风土民情，尤其是美国黑人的贫困生活状态，以此也可激励及鞭策自我。
三、考试
所有的外国人都在ALBANY参加纽约州的考试。所以请至少提前2个月订酒店。
考试分二天。有些州第一天是Local day，第二天是Multistate day。有些州（如纽约）相反。此一差别使得一些学生可参加两个州的考试。
Multistate day 考的全为四选一单选题，而且全为案例题。共200道，上午100道，下午100道，各3个小时。分七大块：宪法，合同法，侵权法， 财产法，刑法及刑诉，信托与继承（TRUST AND WILLS），证据法。
Local day 考的是纽约本州的法律，包含20来门课的内容。题形：50道案例单选题；5个案例分析；1个相当于MEMO的实务题。上下午各3个小时，时间比较紧张。
成绩是在4月多后（即11月中下旬）公布的。可以在网上查看自己是否通过。
纽约州律考的通过率在65%左右，但国际学生（其中部分是读了3年的JD）的通过率却只有20%左右。
顺带说一下，律考每年进行二次，一次在二月，一次在七月。除了这个大考之外，要申请执照还需要参加MPRE，即律师执业道德考试，一年也是考两次，相对来说，内容简单，认真自学准备10天就可通过，可以在读LLM期间就参加该考试。
