About BU Law

Message from Dean Maureen O'Rourke:
Welcome to Boston University School of Law

Welcome to BU Law’s Web site. Throughout the site, you’ll find news and information about the School’s activities and resources. You’ll also learn why BU Law is not only a great school but also a great community. Our faculty, alumni and student body are unmatched in intelligence, energy and ability --and they make BU Law a rich and rewarding place to learn.

BU Law’s faculty is often recognized for its excellence--they are exceptional scholars who love to teach. The Princeton Review and the Leiter Law School Ranking both ranked us in the top-ten for teaching quality in the nation. BU Law also enjoys one of the best reputations for excellence in legal scholarship in the United States and, indeed, the world. We prize scholarship and teaching quality and our faculty excel at both.

At BU Law, you can prepare for the future you want. Few schools match the breadth and depth of our curriculum. You can design your course of study by choosing from more than 150 courses, five concentrations and 16 semester-abroad opportunities. You can choose to participate in clinical programs that will teach you real-world skills under the close supervision of experienced professors and practitioners. You can cross-register in other BU graduate schools, pursue a dual degree by combining law study with other BU graduate programs or pursue a combined J.D./LL.M. degree in either tax or banking and financial law on an accelerated basis. You can work on one of six journals or join one of our many diverse student organizations. And our location in Boston gives you access to some of the best internship and employment opportunities in the nation.

At BU Law, we are a strong community where each of our members is valued and supported. Since we opened our doors in 1872, we have accepted students of ability, regardless of their race, background or beliefs. As a result, many of our graduates have been pioneers in society and in the legal profession. For example, Lelia Robinson (Class of 1881) was the first woman admitted to practice law in Massachusetts; Clara Bruce (Class of 1926) was the first black editor-in-chief of a law review in the nation; the Honorable Harry Elam (Class of 1951) was the first black man appointed to the Boston Municipal Court of Massachusetts and was the founder and first president of the Massachusetts Black Judges Conference; and the Honorable Sandra Lynch (Class of 1971) was the first woman appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Few schools can match this tradition.

Today, our graduates find rewarding legal careers at top law firms, in public interest organizations, at all levels of the judiciary, in state government, in Congress and the White House and at some of the largest corporations and entertainment affiliates in the world. Many of our alumni serve as mentors to current students and provide a strong network across the United States and abroad.

We are a community that values and respects one another. We encourage collegiality, openness and respect for differing points of view. And we have a strong focus on helping our students succeed –while you’re in school and after you graduate. I invite you to explore our remarkable community through this site — and I look forward to seeing you in person on campus.
