The graduate program in Political Science is designed primarily to prepare students for teaching and research. Major fields of specialization are American politics, comparative government and politics, international relations, political methodology, and political philosophy. Students may also take courses in three specialized theme fields: (1) Political Economy, (2) Race and Ethnic Politics, and (3) Religion and Politics. The classes are small, and there is a high level of interaction between faculty and students both within fields and across fields. Resources for study include the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI); the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Gender in the Social Sciences (REGSS); the Program on Democracy, Institutions, and Political Economy (DIPE); and the Political Institutions and Public Choice Program (PIPC).

The following must be needed for the graduate admission: Letters of Evaluation: Three letters are required. They should be written by persons best qualified to testify to Student capacity for graduate work. It is always our preference to have academic references representing Student major field, though we recognize that there are situations where this may not be possible. Transcripts: require one copy of the official, confidential transcript from each institution (undergraduate or graduate) that students have attended. Essential to the review of Student application will be transcripts from any institution where they earned (or will earn) a degree, studied for one semester or more, or took classes that relate to Student current application for graduate study (for example, prerequisite courses).Undergraduate Grade Point Average: All applicants for graduate study at Duke University are required to provide an undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) on their applications.Gre Scores: The Graduate School requires all applicants to provide GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test scores.
