专业不限，对之前是否有数理背景无要求，但是强烈推荐之前学习introductory statistics or first-year calculus, and introductory economics。重视申请者的看重GRE数学部分成绩和PS。尽管不要求工作经验，但是几乎每个进入这个课程的学生都具有至少3年的工作经验，工作经验可以极大增强课堂讨论的价值。
尤其要注意的是伯克利的申请，除了普通的PS，要加一份Personal History Statement: Please describe how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Please include information on how you have overcome barriers to access in higher education, evidence of how you have come to understand the barriers faced by others, evidence of your academic service to advance equitable access to higher education for women, racial minorities, and individuals from other groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education, evidence of your research focusing on underserved populations or related issues of inequality, or evidence of your leadership among such groups.
