Dear Sir or Madam:

Professor working in the field in communication engineering at the Institute of Communication Engineering in Nanjing, China, I am quite willing to write this letter of recommendation in support of Mr. George Wang ‘s application to undertake an advanced degree program at your esteemed university.

Mr. Wang was admitted into our university in 1993 as one of the three tops students among the 200 candidates from Beijing that took part in the highly competitive nationwide University Entrance Examination of the year. Our institute occupies a preeminent position in the field of communication engineering across the country. In 1997, Mr. Wang graduated cum laude from our institute, his GPA ranking among the top five percent among more than 100 students of his major. On account of his excellent academic and extra-curricular performance, Mr. Wang was consecutively awarded the first-class and second-class scholarships at the Institute level.

During his undergraduate studies, Mr. Wang impressed me with his outstanding capabilities. He was very strong in his practical abilities to conduct independent experiments and research projects. He devoted significant attention to develop his qualities in combining the theoretical knowledge to pragmatic problems. By closely following the cutting-edge development and the latest technical literature in international communication engineering, Mr. Wang excelled his fellow students by his in-depth command of the specialized knowledge in the area. He possessed a broad understanding of Inter-networking, which was well demonstrated in the work that he undertook as a web developer and designer. Even as an undergraduate, he was made responsible for designing the graphics and developing the website for the Intranet of the Institute. Serving as my research assistant, he worked as network administrator to maintain the availability and security of the file, print and application services of our Institute. In a research project in his final year at the Institute, he and his group members designed and implemented the infrastructure including frame relay, wireless and PPP links for intranet/internet service, including Lotus Notes as the primary server for internal/external e-mail service and proxy services.

On another occasion, Mr. Wang was invited to change the background, width, and the pagination shown on the user‘s terminal. This work included hundreds of the database tables of the student files in the Web server. Rather than the usual time-consuming practice of developing a program for each database table, Mr. Wang, by referring to the English materials on ASP that I provided for him, developed a versatile COM component for the Server terminal of the WEB database, which supplied a complete solution to the problem. Later, he also created forms to display and enter data in a convenient formant using MS SQL 8.0. His ability to accomplish all those challenges tasks testifies to that fact that Mr. Wang is a fast learner, in addition to his well-grounded knowledge in computer science.

I very much appreciate Mr. Wang‘s scholastic aptitudes and his readiness to explore new horizons of computer science. All those praiseworthy qualities will make him fully equipped to undertake even more challenging tasks in his prospective degree program at your university. It is my firm belief that he will satisfactorily acquit himself, as he did at our Institute. With those considerations, I strongly support him in his current application efforts and your favorable consideration of his application will be duly appreciated.

Yours Sincerely
