The Ph.D. program at Berkeley is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced study and conducting original research in economics. The Ph.D. degree is awarded in recognition of the recipient.s qualifications as a general economist and of the ability to make scholarly contributions in fields of specialization. The entire process takes approximately five years, although some students are able to complete the program in less time.

The minimum graduate admission requirements are: a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in students chosen field; and a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B). Satisfying minimal standards, however, does not guarantee their admission, since the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of places available. All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service. International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
