Message From The Dean
One of eleven professional schools at UCLA, the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) is a community of learning and action.  Its members are scholars, practitioners, teachers, agenda setters, and public intellectuals who research, teach, and prepare practitioners and researchers in learning and information fields in an environment of multiple constituencies.  The shared goal is to enhance the life experience of all individuals through inquiry, professional practice, and policy that lead to equitable access to quality education and useful information.

At the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS), we educate educators and information professionals, generate new knowledge, nurture scholars, and create new standards for learning, teaching, and accessing and using information.

The school is dedicated to developing models and strategies leading to new knowledge about learning, teaching and the various forms and organization of information and people’s relation to it.  Its goal is to improve the capacity of all individuals to understand the world through equitable access to quality education and open information.

Both GSE&IS’s Department of Education and Department of Information Studies are highly ranked among their peer institutions around the country.  Using Los Angeles as a living laboratory for much of their work, faculty are inspired in their research by real-world challenges and demands, and serve as resources to practitioners and policy-makers.  Education faculty are internationally known in such areas as student assessment and testing, educational technology, kindergarten-through-12th-grade education and higher education.  Information studies faculty are internationally recognized as experts in areas including information retrieval systems, digital libraries and archives, and the information needs of diverse populations.
