Objectives
Students completing a master's degree at the School of Information will build knowledge and skills to prepare them for a wide variety of employment, research, and publication options throughout their professional careers.

Degree Requirements
The ability to use computers and networked communication technologies is essential for professional work in information studies. This expertise may be enhanced through coursework in the School, but prior knowledge of computer and network applications is critical to successful completion of the program. Computer and Internet application tutorials are accessible for review at: http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/technology/tutorials/.

The master's degree program entails 40 semester hours of graduate and upper-division undergraduate coursework (not more than nine hours of the latter). At least 24 semester credit hours must be in information studies courses, including certain required courses. Up to 12 hours, depending on the student's background and objectives, may be in closely related courses in other subject areas. A student's choice of courses must have the approval of the student's individual advisor.

All courses numbered x2x and higher are upper-division undergraduate and will count toward the master's degree. No more than 9 hours total in the Master of Science in Information Studies program may be upper-division and of that 9, no more than 6 may be from any one department (ours or anyone else's).

Effective fall 1999 no undergraduate courses apply to a master's student's GPA.

Accreditation
The University's program for the degree of Master of Science in Information Studies has been accredited by the American Library Association. (The ALA does not concern itself with accrediting programs in information studies in levels other than the master's degree.) The programs for certification of learning resources personnel have been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Texas Education Agency.
