- This concentration highlights the new challenges to journalism in a changing public sphere defined by the emergence of new technologies, global media organizations, and a 24-hour news cycle. Drawing on social science and cultural studies research, this broad range of courses allows graduate students to assess how the above factors influence the potential for democratic citizenship, both nationally and internationally. The program enhances the skills of working media professionals as well as preparing students for careers in academia, journalism, and related fields.

- The minimum requirements for admission are: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, a grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 credits of undergraduate course work, or a total score of 1000 or higher on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE),taken within the last five years. Highly promising applicants who do not precisely meet the above GPA or GRE standards can petition the College Graduate Admissions Committee for a review of their file, including such evidence as undergraduate grade trends; professional work experience; performance in preparatory undergraduate criminal justice courses; subsequent scores after retaking the GRE; and related indicators of graduate-level capability. An international student is required to achieve a minimum score of 550 (CBT-213) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
