GrotonSchooland the Circle

Founded in 1884 by Rev. Endicott Peabody, Groton's original aims included the intellectual, moral and physical development of its students in grades seven through twelve towards preparation for both college and "the active work of life." Now a coeducational, primarily residential school of 181 girls and 172 boys in grades eight through twelve, we set for our students the highest standards of academic achievement, intellectual growth, ethical awareness and behavior, sportsmanship, athletic endeavor and service to others.

The School takes leadership seriously, and our concern for character is a point of distinction. Our mission has never been narrowly to prepare students for college, but rather always to provide an experience which, while academically rigorous, goes far beyond college requirements, addressing important personal aspects of growth and maturity. Through the years the means of achieving our aims have changed, yet Groton's size and its particular balance of tradition and innovation continue to provide exceptional opportunities to deserving students from diverse social, geographic, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Our unflagging commitment to each student's intellectual, moral, and physical growth and to the considerable resources of faculty, facility, and locale creates a school which is larger than the sum of its parts.

Grotonbelieves in the notion that teachers should take part in students' lives. Groton's faculty does what the best faculties do: it supports the highest level of academic activity, but it also creates a special form of life for the student. This relationship between students and faculty reaches beyond the classroom and affirms and nurtures the spirit as it challenges the mind. In this way, the faculty fulfills the founding vision that Groton teachers take up the teaching profession as "their life's work."

"Groton School is a diverse and intimate community devoted to inspiring lives of character, learning, leadership and service."
