We realize the visa interview can be an extremely nervous experience for many applicants, but if you know what to expect on your appointment day, it may help make the interview more comfortable:

When you enter the Embassy’s east gate, you will be greeted by a People’s Armed Police guard who will check your I.D./passport. You will then walk through a security check area staffed by Embassy guards, who will request that you temporarily leave your phone and other electronic equipment in the security area during your interview.

You will then walk briefly outside to the main visa waiting hall, passing the brightly colored modern art sculpture, “Tulips”, designed by Jeff Koons, on your left.

Once you are inside the visa waiting hall, you will be directed by the Embassy’s greeters to line up at the intake window where you drop off your documents to Embassy staff currently seated at windows #13 and #14. You will then be given a color card and directed to line up to have your fingerprints taken. Afterwards, you will then be directed to the other side of the hall to wait for your interview with a Consular Officer.

During the interview itself, don’t be nervous! We understand it’s an important moment, but remember to relax, speak clearly and answer the Consular Officer’s questions directly. Note that there is a microphone to your left as you stand at the window. For a demonstration of the application process, please click on the video link on the right side of this page.

A few additional reminders:

-Bathrooms are located on the first and second floor.

-There is a water cooler in the corner of the room, next to Xu Bing’s art piece hanging from the ceiling, “Monkeys Grasping for the Moon”. Cups are provided and water is available for free for all guests in the waiting room.

-On very hot days, the temperature in the waiting room can be significantly lower than the temperature outside, so you may want to bring a sweater or long sleeve shirt just in case.

-For elderly, pregnant or infirm applicants, there is also a bench towards the side of the room for general use.

I hope this is helpful and all the best with your visa interview!
