Student must complete 135 course units for graduation. CS Ph.D. students take 9 units (10 units is optimal) a quarter. The purpose of the Breadth Requirement for the Doctoral program is to ensure that each graduate of the program has adequate knowledge of the core areas in the field of Computer Science.

Three letters of recommendation are required; GRE (Graduate Record Examination): Scores from the GRE General Test are required of all applicants for graduate study. Scores must be from an examination taken within the last five years of the application deadline. The General Test consists of three sections measuring verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills. Scores from all three sections are required. The Subject GRE test is not required when applying to the Master program. TOEFL scores are required of all applicants whose first language is not English regardless of citizenship status. Individuals who have completed a bachelor degree or a two-year master program in the U.S. or another English-speaking country are exempted from submitting TOEFL scores. If required, scores must be submitted from a test taken within the last eighteen months of the application deadline. applicants to take the Computer Science Subject Test. In addition, scores from a Subject Test in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics also may be submitted.
